power lines hum in the moist air
and provide slight variation for the cold sky

my son has learned the word "latte"
"Daddy, lah-tay" "Daddy, lah-tay"
relishing every syllable

we take down streamers from his 2nd birthday
removing thumbtacks from drywall

a single crack in the ceiling paint
marks the settling of the house
into its foundation
